NHRC Initiates Suo motu Proceeding Following Fatal RINL Plant Blast in Andhra Pradesh
(By Syed Ali Taher Abedi)
11, June,2026-The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday initiated Suo motu proceedings following a deadly explosion at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) steel plant in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, that claimed the lives of eight workers and left six others injured.
The commission said it would seek a detailed report from the state government and RINL management on the circumstances of the blast, the immediate rescue and medical response, and measures being taken to support the victims’ families and prevent future accidents.
The incident reportedly occurred when a ladle containing nearly 150 tonnes of molten steel, heated to an estimated 1600°C, suddenly burst, causing the fiery liquid metal to spill across the shop floor. The catastrophic blast left workers engulfed in flames, resulting in fatalities and severe injuries.
The workers’ union has alleged that the management failed to adhere to essential safety protocols, thereby exposing employees to grave risks.
Taking serious note of the matter, the NHRC has observed that, if the contents of the media report are accurate, they raise profound concerns of human rights violations particularly the right to life and health guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. In response, the Commission has issued formal notices to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, directing submission of a comprehensive report within two weeks.
The Commission has specifically sought details regarding:
- The current medical condition and treatment status of the injured workers.
- The provision of ex-gratia relief to the victims and the next of kin of the deceased.
- Measures taken to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence of such industrial disasters.
This Suo motu intervention underscores the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of workers, while also highlighting the urgent need for strict enforcement of workplace safety standards in India’s industrial sector.
