(By Syed Ali Taher Abedi)
22 May 2026 Senior Advocate Billwadal Bhattacharya has been appointed as Additional Advocate General of West Bengal, making him the second law officer to assume the role this week.
The appointment follows the Bharatiya Janata Party’s assumption of power in the state. Earlier this week, Senior Advocate Rajdeep Mazumder was similarly appointed to the same position.
Bhattacharya was conferred the designation of Senior Advocate by the Calcutta High Court in November 2024, following a Full Court meeting held on 21 November 2024, in which 81 advocates were collectively recognised with the distinction.
Prior to his designation, Bhattacharya served as Deputy Solicitor General of India for the Calcutta High Court until 2024, during which time he represented the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in several significant matters before the Court.
These included cases arising from the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam, among other high-profile proceedings.
Bhattacharya has also been prominently involved in matters of constitutional and political significance in West Bengal.
Most recently, he appeared before the Calcutta High Court on behalf of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in proceedings concerning the entry of security personnel into the West Bengal Legislative Assembly premises.
In those proceedings, he raised the question of whether constitutional provisions could be rendered inoperative through an administrative communication issued from the Speaker’s office.
In related developments, Senior Advocates Nilanjan Bhattacharyya and Dibyendra Narayan Ray have been appointed as Senior Standing Counsel and Government Pleader, respectively.
