May 12, 2026 | Chennai- In a development of considerable significance to the legal fraternity of Tamil Nadu, Senior Advocate Vijay Narayan is slated to assume charge as the new Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, following the recent change of government in the State.
Credible sources have confirmed that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration, led by Chief Minister Vijay the celebrated actor-turned-politician has settled upon Narayan as the State’s next principal law officer, in what would mark a return to a constitutional role he had previously held with considerable distinction.
The Office of the Advocate General a Constitutional Responsibility
The Advocate General is a constitutional functionary appointed under Article 165 of the Constitution of India. The holder of this office serves as the highest legal advisor to the State Government, represents the State before the High Court and, when called upon, before the Supreme Court, and discharges such other duties of a legal character as may be assigned by the Governor.
The office commands a unique position at the intersection of the Bar and the Executive the incumbent must possess the professional standing requisite to appear before the High Court while simultaneously lending legal credibility and institutional gravitas to the government’s conduct of litigation and legal policy.
The appointment is thus not merely a matter of political patronage; it carries with it the weight of constitutional trust and demands a lawyer of demonstrable eminence, unimpeachable integrity, and breadth of legal acumen.
A Return to Familiar Constitutional Ground
Vijay Narayan is no stranger to this role. He had previously served as the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu from 2017 to 2021 a tenure that earned him wide respect within the Madras Bar and beyond for his measured advocacy and institutional conduct.
His reappointment, if and when formalised, would place him once again at the helm of the State’s legal apparatus this time serving a government of an altogether different political complexion from the one under which he was first elevated to the post
He will succeed Senior Advocate P.S. Raman, who held the office during the preceding Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government since 2024.
The transition of the office of Advocate General alongside a change of political dispensation is a well-established constitutional practice, as the top law officer is understood to hold office at the pleasure of the government of the day and is expected to reflect the legal philosophy and litigation strategy of the ruling administration
A Legal Lineage of Rare Distinction
What sets Vijay Narayan apart beyond his own formidable professional record is the extraordinary legal heritage he carries.
He comes from a family of eminent lawyers and jurists. He is the nephew of former Attorney General for India K.K. Venugopal, one of the most respected constitutional lawyers of the modern era.
His paternal grandfather was the legendary advocate M.K. Nambiar, a titan of the Indian Bar who played a seminal role in several foundational constitutional cases in the early decades of the Republic.
His maternal grandfather was Sardar K.M. Panikkar, a distinguished statesman, scholar, and member of the Constituent Assembly of India.
To carry such a lineage is both a privilege and a burden and by all accounts, Vijay Narayan has borne it with professional composure, forging an independent identity at the Bar rather than resting on the formidable reputations of those who preceded him.
Professional Formation and Career at the Bar
Narayan pursued his undergraduate education at the prestigious Loyola College, Chennai, before obtaining his LL.B. from the Law College, Madras in 1982. Upon his entry into the profession, he joined the chambers of Senior Advocate P. Chidambaram the eminent lawyer and former Union Finance Minister and worked alongside him until Chidambaram’s election to Parliament.
This early association with one of India’s foremost legal and political minds would have provided Narayan with an invaluable apprenticeship in high-stakes constitutional and commercial litigation
In recognition of his professional standing and contributions to the Bar, Narayan was conferred the designation of Senior Advocate in 2004 the highest honour the Bar can bestow upon a practising advocate, granted by the court in acknowledgment of exceptional ability and standing in the legal profession.
The Significance of the Appointment
The impending appointment carries significance on multiple levels. For the TVK government navigating the complex administrative and legal challenges that inevitably accompany any newly-elected State administration securing an Advocate General of Vijay Narayan’s calibre sends a clear signal of intent to be well-represented before the courts and to approach matters of legal policy with seriousness of purpose.
For the Madras High Court Bar, the reappointment of a Senior Advocate of such standing and institutional familiarity is likely to be received as a reassuring continuity in the quality of State representation before the court.
The Advocate General’s role in the conduct of public interest litigation, revenue and fiscal disputes, constitutional challenges to State legislation, and criminal matters of State concern is both vast and consequential and demands a steady hand and a sharp legal mind.
