New Delhi, October 3, 2026: A Delhi court has directed the Delhi Police to place a status report on record in proceedings concerning a complaint that seeks the registration of a first information report (FIR) against Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over remarks comparing government officials to Lord Hanuman.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwani Panwar of the Rouse Avenue Court passed the direction while hearing a plea filed by Ram Niwas Sharma.

The police have been asked to submit their report by October 15; the date fixed for the next hearing.

The complaint arises from remarks Gupta is alleged to have made on September 23, 2025, at an official programme marking the commencement of Delhi Transport Corporation bus services from Delhi to Baraut, Uttar Pradesh.

As set out in the plea, the Chief Minister likened Delhi government officials to Hanuman, saying they remembered their power only when their “tail was set on fire,” and referred to the deity in connection with the venue of the programme.

Sharma contends that the statement was made at a public forum during an official government event and was heard by officials, attendees and members of the public.

On that basis, he has sought police action and the registration of an FIR against Gupta.

The remarks reportedly drew criticism from some quarters, with objections that they had offended religious sentiment. Those objections, however, remain allegations advanced in the public debate and in the complaint; the court’s direction, as reported, is limited to calling for a police status report.

The matter is next listed for October 15, when the court is expected to consider the report and determine the further course of proceedings. No finding on the merits of the complaint or on whether an FIR should be registered is reported at this stage.
