June 2, 2026 | A Bhopal trial court has ordered former judge Giribala Singh to remain in judicial custody for 14 days in connection with the dowry-related death of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma.
Singh and her son Samarth Singh Sharma’s husband were taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last month. When Singh was produced before the court on Monday, the CBI opted not to seek an extension of its custodial remand, prompting Judge Shobhana Bhalawe to commit her to 14-day judicial custody.
Background
Noida-native Twisha Sharma had married Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh after the two met on a dating app. She was found dead at the couple’s Bhopal residence on May 12.
Her family subsequently filed a complaint alleging sustained domestic abuse and harassment linked to dowry demands, leading to an FIR being registered at the Katara Hills police station.
Giribala Singh, a retired judicial officer who currently heads the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Madhya Pradesh, had initially secured anticipatory bail from a sessions court on May 15.
The court had reasoned that the accusations were directed primarily at her son. However, the Madhya Pradesh High Court reversed that order on May 28, clearing the way for her arrest.
Meanwhile, Samarth Singh, who had approached the High Court for protection after being denied anticipatory bail by the Sessions Court, withdrew his plea on May 22. The court noted he could surrender either before the investigating officer or the trial court.
