Killing Of Atiq Ahmed, Brother: Supreme Court Agrees To Hear Plea Seeking Independent Probe On April 24

Hyderabad19, April, 2023: The Apex Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea seeking independent probe investigation into the killing of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh Pragyaraj district.
The petition filed by Advocate Vishal Tiwari has south setting up of a separate committee headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge to probe the killing.
It is said that the power of such highlighted actions are a severe threat to the democracy and rule of law, such acts are establishments of anarchy and prima facie development of police state. The Extra judicial killing or fake police encounters have been very badly condemned under the law. In a democratic society the police cannot be allowed to become a mode of delivering final justice or to become a punishing Authority.
The power of punishment is only vested in the Judiciary.
The killing which took place at around 10:30 was captured live on camera even as the two brothers were answering questions posed by media persons.
The remand of the Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf began on April 13, was to end on 5pm on April 16. The killers posed as journalists to sneak into the crowd and shoot the duo.
Apart from this recent killing, the petitioner seeks enquiry into the 183 extra-judicial killings that have taken place in Utter Pradesh since 2017.
The bench of Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chabndrachud took note of the plea, which also sought the independent panel to probe the brazen murder of gangster-turned-politician.
The duo was shot dead on a point blank range by three men while police personal were escorting them to a medical college in Prayagrag for a check-up.
The petitioner said in his PIL against the violation of rule of law, alleging that oppressive brutality was being perpetrated by Utter Pradesh police “The dare devils which the Utter Pradesh Police has tried to become.
The petitioner also appraised the court that he had approached it in a matter pertaining to the killing of Vikas Dubey, saying that a similar incident was repeated by Utter Pradesh police in the encounter killing of Asad, son of Atiq Ahmed.The petitioner said that such incidents are a severe threat to the democracy and rule of law, and establishment of Anarchy and prima facie, development of police state.
