London: A prestigious legal address by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant at the historic Middle Temple in London was abruptly thrown into disarray on Tuesday, following a disruptive intervention by a group of protesters identified as students.

The event, intended to be a high-level dialogue on legal jurisprudence, faced an unexpected interruption when demonstrators began shouting slogans and causing a commotion. The agitators reportedly breached the decorum of the hall, forcing a momentary halt to the proceedings as security personnel scrambled to manage the situation.

The incident occurred during the question-and-answer session following the CJI’s address on “Artificial Intelligence and International law”

We now hear from a number of legal observers within the country as well as internationally that there’s a great deal of concern about growing hostility to dissent within India. And it does seem that this hostility is somewhat reflected in his Lordship’s speech and it’s very well published.”

The incident drew swift and sharp condemnation from the Indian diplomatic mission. In a strongly worded statement released shortly after the event, the High Commission of India in London denounced the actions of the protesters.

Another questioned the CJI about his cockroach remarks made on May 15 in India.

The exchange was cut short by moderator who said “With all due respect, I would not be able to take up that question since the topic is concerning artificial intelligence and international law”

Describing the disruption as unacceptable, the High Commission categorized the behaviour as “indecorous.” The statement emphasized that such actions disrespected the dignity of the office held by the Chief Justice and violated the sanctity of the academic and legal forum where the lecture was being hosted.

According to reports, the protesters were vocal in their dissent, attempting to derail the lecture with their chants. However, the situation was eventually brought under control, allowing the event to proceed, albeit under a shadow of tension.

The High Commission’s reaction highlights the growing concern regarding the safety and protocol surrounding high-profile international engagements by Indian officials.

The diplomatic body has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that such platforms are used for constructive exchange rather than political theatrics, urging respect for the rule of law and the dignity of invited guests.
