In a formal letter directed to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K.Stalin through his MP Mr.P.Wilson has raised serious concerns regarding the release of the film Sanatani – Karma hi Dharma, which premiered today in Odisha. The letter, issued under the guidance of the Chief Minister, urges the CBFC to stay the certification granted for the film and revoke its release due to the controversial and offensive portrayal of religious and cultural groups.
The film, as reported, is alleged to depict derogatory representations of Jesus Christ, Christian services, and core aspects of Christian doctrine. In particular, it is accused of distorting the image of Jesus and misrepresenting the sacrament of Baptism. Furthermore, the film reportedly portrays conversion as a criminal activity, directly contravening the constitutional right to freedom of religion in India.
The MP’s letter emphasizes that the Constitution of India protects every citizen’s right to freely choose and practice their religion. Any film or media that undermines this fundamental right is seen as not only unconstitutional but also detrimental to the social cohesion of a pluralistic nation.
The letter also expresses concern about the film’s potential to incite hatred against tribal communities, who are an essential part of India’s heritage. It suggests that the film perpetuates harmful narratives that threaten the rights of these communities, particularly regarding their access to land, water, and forest resources. This, in turn, could lead to greater social disharmony and conflict.
It was noted in the letter that the CBFC initially denied certification for the film in Cuttack, Odisha, due to its contentious content. However, after making minor modifications, including changing the title, the filmmakers successfully secured a UA certificate from CBFC’s Mumbai office. This change has raised questions about the adequacy of the film certification process and whether adequate safeguards are in place to prevent films from promoting divisiveness and polarization.
While recognizing freedom of expression as a fundamental right, the Chief Minister urged that it should not come at the expense of stoking communal tensions or targeting vulnerable communities. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government has requested that:
- The CBFC immediately stay the certification for the screening of Sanatani – Karma hi Dharma across the country until a thorough review of its content and certification process is conducted.
- The CBFC revoke the certification entirely due to concerns that the film’s content is misleading, offensive, and socially divisive, thereby violating guidelines meant to maintain public order and communal harmony.
The Chief Minister emphasized that India’s true strength lies in its unity amidst diversity. At a time when maintaining communal harmony is crucial, allowing the film to screen could risk deepening divisions and offending the sentiments of millions of Christians across the nation. The letter concludes with a call for prompt intervention to address these pressing concerns and safeguard the social fabric of the country.
