Sexual Assault of Minor Allegedly by Bus Driver, Conductor: NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance

New Delhi: 1st September 2026-The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken Suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report concerning the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl by the driver and conductor of a bus that she reportedly boarded from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, on August 4, 2026.
The Commission has viewed the reported incident as a matter warranting its intervention from the standpoint of the protection of human rights and the safety and dignity of a minor.
According to the media report relied upon by the NHRC, the girl was allegedly subjected to sexual assault by the bus driver and conductor during the journey.
The alleged perpetrators reportedly threatened the victim with dire consequences and subsequently abandoned her at the Kashmere Gate Bus Terminal in Delhi.
Taking cognizance of the reported violation, the NHRC has issued notices to the Police Commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Budh Nagar, as well as the Superintendent of Police, Mainpuri, calling upon them to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
The Commission has specifically sought information regarding the status and progress of the investigation, besides details of whether any compensation or other relief has been provided to the victim in accordance with law.
The NHRC’s intervention assumes significance as the alleged victim is a minor, thereby raising serious questions concerning the protection of children from sexual violence, the efficacy of law-enforcement mechanisms and the duty of the State to ensure the safety, dignity and fundamental rights of vulnerable victims.
The Commission’s Suo motu proceedings are based on the reported facts and are intended to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence, the action taken by the concerned authorities and the measures adopted to protect the victim and secure justice.
The NHRC has sought a comprehensive response from the concerned police authorities within the stipulated two-week period.
The reports are expected to place before the Commission the present status of the criminal investigation, action taken against the alleged perpetrators and the assistance, rehabilitation or compensation, if any, extended to the victim.
The development underscores the NHRC’s continuing mandate to examine alleged violations of human rights and to call upon State authorities to account for their response where serious allegations involving the dignity, security and bodily integrity of individuals come to light.
