The National Human Rights Commission has taken Suo motu cognizance of the reported physical assault of a woman from Manipur who was allegedly attacked by a group of boys after she objected to their lewd and racially abusive remarks in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi. The incident is reported to have occurred on March 8, 2026.
Taking serious note of the matter, the Commission has issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has asked the authorities to provide information on the current health condition of the victim as well as the progress made in the investigation into the alleged assault and racial abuse.
The National Human Rights Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if found to be true, raise a grave issue concerning the violation of the victim’s human rights.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the Commission has decided to intervene in the matter and has accordingly issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a comprehensive report within a period of two weeks.
The Commission has directed that the report should, inter alia, contain details regarding the present health condition of the victim, the medical assistance extended to her, and the progress made in the investigation conducted by the police authorities.
According to the media report, which was published on March 10, 2026, the incident reportedly occurred when the victim was taking photographs with her friend at a park in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi.
It is alleged that during this time, a group of boys approached them and began making lewd and racially abusive remarks.
When the woman objected to the offensive behaviour, the situation reportedly escalated, culminating in a physical assault on her.
The Commission has taken serious cognizance of these allegations, noting that such acts, if substantiated, not only amount to criminal misconduct but also reflect a disturbing instance of racial discrimination and violation of the dignity and safety of individuals.
