Justice D.Y. Chadrachud Appointed 50th Chief Justice of India, Centre Issues Notification.

The Central Government on Monday notified the appointment of Justice DY Chandrachd as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI)

President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice D.Y Chandrachyud as the 50th Chief Justice of India Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said on October 17.

Justice Chandrachud will tahe oath on November 9, a day after incumbent CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demist office on attaining the age of 65.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 09th November, 2022.”The Notification issued by Ministry of Law And Justice said.

Justice Chandrachud, who was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 13 May 2016.Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from 31 October 2013 until appointment to the Supreme Court.
Later he was appointed as Judge of the Bombay High Court from 29 March 2000 until appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He also served as Director of Maharashtra Judicial Academy.
Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 until appointment as a Judge.

Justice Chandrachud , presently the senior most Supreme Court judge after Justice Lalit.
He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998.Practised law at the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court. Justice Chandrachud also delivered his lectures as a Visiting Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Mumbai.  Visiting Professor at Oklahoma University School of Law, USA.
Delivered lectures at the Australian National University, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Speaker at conferences organised by bodies of the United Nations including United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, International Labour Organisation and United Nations Environmental Program, the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
He obtained LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, USA.
He is BA with Honours in Economics from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi. LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.
