International Rule of Law Lecture 2019

he President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia, Meaza Ashenafi, will give the keynote address at the Bar Council International Committee’s 13th Annual International Rule of Law Lecture.

The topic of the lecture will be ‘Championing Judicial Independence During Democratic Transition.’

The event will be held on Monday 11 November at 6pm in the auditorium at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, 65 Fleet Street, Temple, London EC4Y 1HT.

Meaza Ashenafi was a judge on Ethiopia’s High Court from 1989 to 1992 and then an adviser to a commission writing up its new constitution. She also founded the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association and helped start the first women’s bank in the country, Enat Bank.

In November 2018, she was appointed by the Federal Parliamentary Assembly as President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia.

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session and a drinks reception.
