A Landmark in Indian Judiciary: Justice B.R.Gavai Becomes 52nd CJI — Breaking Barriers as First Buddhist and Second Dalit to Lead Supreme Court

New Delhi 14, May0, 2025-Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has officially assumed office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, following the tenure of Justice Sanjiv Khanna. His appointment marks a significant moment in the judicial history of the country, bringing diverse representation to the highest judicial seat.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, administered the oath of office to Justice Gavai. His term as Chief Justice will span a little over six months, concluding on November 23, 2025.

The swearing-in event was attended by several prominent political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Additionally, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and former President Ram Nath Kovind graced the occasion, highlighting the significance of the transition in the country’s judiciary.

Several sitting and former Supreme Court judges were also present, including Justice Surya Kant, Justice A.G. Masih, Justice P.S. Narasimha, Justice B.V. Nagarathna, and Justice Bela Trivedi, along with the outgoing Chief Justice, Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

Justice Gavai’s appointment as the Chief Justice of India is historic in multiple aspects. He is the second Chief Justice belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who served in the position until 2010. Additionally, Justice Gavai is the first Buddhist judge to ascend to the highest judicial post in India, adding to the significance of his appointment.

His judicial journey has been notable. He was elevated from the Bombay High Court to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, where he has contributed to key rulings and decisions. As Chief Justice, his tenure will focus on upholding judicial integrity, addressing pressing legal issues, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the Supreme Court during his time in office.

Justice Gavai’s leadership is expected to bring a new perspective to India’s judiciary, with a focus on inclusivity, equity, and judicial reforms.
