NHRC At 33: Over 24 Lakh Cases Handled, ₹274 Crore Relief Recommended

CJI Justice Surya Kant to Grace NHRC Foundation Day; National Conference to Focus on Right to Water

New Delhi, October 9: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, will celebrate its 33rd Foundation Day on October 12, 2026, with Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Guest at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Marking over three decades of human rights protection, the Commission has handled 24,33,716 cases, including 3,100 suo motu matters, and recommended monetary relief exceeding ₹274 crore in 9,085 cases involving alleged human rights violations.

During the year from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026, the NHRC registered 54,673 complaints and 119 suo motu cases, conducted 80 spot enquiries and recommended over ₹9.7 crore in relief in 157 cases.

The Foundation Day programme will be followed by a national conference titled “Water as the Elixir of Life: Advancing Human Dignity through the Right to Water,” focusing on the protection of water bodies and ensuring safe, sustainable access to drinking water.

The milestone underscores the Commission’s continuing mandate to strengthen accountability, safeguard fundamental human rights and advance dignity and justice for all.
