NOIDA Sewer Horror: NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Fatal Toxic Gas Incident

New Delhi, July 16, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken Suo motu cognizance of the reported death of a man who allegedly succumbed to toxic gas inhalation while cleaning a sewer line under an operation undertaken by the NOIDA Authority in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Budh Nagar district.
Viewing the incident as a matter of grave concern involving the safety and dignity of sanitation workers, the Commission has initiated proceedings to examine the circumstances leading to the fatality and ensure accountability for any lapses.
The Commission said the news report, if accurate, points to potential human-rights violations and has accordingly issued notices to the Chairman of the NOIDA Authority and the Commissioner of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar, seeking a detailed response within two weeks.
The media account, published on 15 July 2026, alleges that police and Fire Brigade personnel pulled the victim from the scene and rushed him to hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
