Justice Lisa Gill Recommended as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court by Top Court Collegium

New Delhi 27, February 2026- The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer and appointment of Justice Lisa Gill, currently a judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. This decision was unanimously taken during the Collegium’s meeting on February 26, 2026.​

Collegium Resolution Details

The resolution specifies transferring Justice Gill to the Andhra Pradesh High Court initially as a puisne judge, with her elevation to Chief Justice effective from the date the vacancy arises.

She will assume the role on April 25, 2026, succeeding incumbent Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur upon his retirement.

This advance transfer aligns with the Collegium’s newly adopted policy, allowing incoming Chief Justices to familiarize themselves with the High Court’s administration at least two months prior.​

Justice Lisa Gill’s Background

Justice Gill is an alumnus of Panjab University’s Department of Laws, where she earned her B.A. LL.B. (three-year course) and LL.M. She enrolled as an advocate in 1990 and practiced extensively at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, handling criminal, civil, service, revenue, and constitutional matters.

She represented the Union Territory of Chandigarh and various boards and corporations during her practice.​

Judicial Career Highlights

Elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge, Justice Gill was confirmed as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 31, 2014.

With over 11 years on the High Court bench by 2026, her recommendation underscores her seniority and merit in the judicial fraternity.

The formal appointment awaits approval from the Union government under Article 217 of the Constitution.
