Delhi, September, 18,2025-In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken Suo motu cognizance of a media report detailing the horrific murder of a woman in Farrukhabad district, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on 6th September 2025, when the victim, identified as 33-year-old Nisha Singh, was allegedly doused with petrol and set ablaze by a group of individuals while she was out to purchase medicine for her daughter2.
Despite being rushed to a local clinic and later referred to Saifai Medical University due to the severity of her burns, Nisha succumbed to her injuries during treatment. According to her father, Balram Singh, Nisha named the accused—including a man identified as Deepak and four others—before her death. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered by the local police, and investigations are underway.
The NHRC, upon reviewing the media coverage of the incident, stated that if the facts reported are accurate, they represent a grave violation of human rights. In response, the Commission has issued formal notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within two weeks.
The Commission has specifically requested details on:
1.The status of the police investigation and legal proceedings against the accused
2.Measures taken to ensure justice for the victim and her family
3.Any compensation or support provided to the next of kin (NOK) of the deceased
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with citizens and activists calling for swift and stringent action against the perpetrators. Nisha’s family has appealed for justice, emphasizing the need for accountability and protection for women in the region.
As the NHRC awaits the official response from state authorities, the case continues to highlight the urgent need for systemic reforms to prevent such heinous crimes and uphold the dignity and safety of women across India.
