We Should Wait for Committee’s Findings on Justice Yashwant Varma’s Cash Controversy; Says Amit Shah.

The central government has announced the transfer of Justice Yashwant Verma from the Delhi High Court back to his original court in Allahabad. This decision comes shortly after a three-member committee, appointed by the Supreme Court of India, initiated an investigation into Justice Verma’s conduct. Union Home Minister Amit Shah publicly addressed the ongoing controversy, emphasizing the importance of waiting for the committee’s conclusions. Justice Verma has been at the centre of scrutiny following the discovery of burnt currency allegedly found at his residence during a fire on March 14. In light of such serious allegations, Shah stated that, according to a Supreme Court ruling, a panel of judges will evaluate the situation and subsequently release their findings. He urged patience as the committee proceeds with its investigation. Shah noted that the Chief Justice of India has acknowledged the issue and established a committee to look into it, which is currently gathering documents from the Delhi Police and the fire department. When questioned about inconsistencies regarding the recovery of a significant amount of cash, Shah refuted the claims, asserting that the fire chief did not report any discrepancies. He explained that a seizure cannot occur without a registered FIR, which requires the Chief Justice’s approval. On Friday, a Supreme Court bench led by Justice A. S. Oka declined to consider a plea for filing an FIR against Justice Verma, stating that it is within the Chief Justice’s discretion to authorize such a registration after the internal inquiry is completed.
