Vantara in Full Legal Compliance, Declares Supreme Court After SIT Probe

Delhi September,15,2025- In a significant development, the Supreme Court has accepted the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report regarding the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre—popularly known as Vantara run by the Reliance Foundation in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:

 SIT Findings

The SIT, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice J. Chelameswar, found no foul play in the acquisition of animals, including elephants. The facility was deemed to be in strict compliance with regulatory norms, both for domestic and international animal acquisitions.

 Supreme Court Observations. The Bench comprising Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice PB Varale expressed satisfaction with the SIT’s findings. The Court praised the promptness and thoroughness of the committee and suggested that an honorarium be provided for their work. Final orders will be passed in chambers during lunch, after which the matter will be closed.

 About Vantara. Vantara is a sprawling 3,000-acre facility within Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery complex. It includes a 650-acre rescue centre for animals from distressed environments, with advanced enclosures, hydrotherapy pools, and even elephant Jacuzzis.

The Court also cautioned against tarnishing the reputation of such initiatives without evidence, calling Vantara a source of national pride.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Senior Advocate Harish Salve appeared for Vantara and petitioner’s counsel were present.

Justice Mithal orally said that acquisition of Animals carried out in regulatory compliance.

Justice Mithal further said that certain part of the report will be added in order. However, both Solicitor General and Salve Objected to it. They said that a certain narrative is going on and publishing the report will allow more speculations than necessary. Citing the reason that there is some confidentiality is attached to how the animals are taken care, etc. Justice Mithal then said that the court will pass orders during lunch in chambers and will then close the matter.

The appreciated the promptness of the Committee and also said that an honorarium may be provided to the Committee.
