In a historic moment for Kerala’s judiciary, Advocate O.M. Shalina has been appointed as the first woman Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) for the Kerala High Court. Her appointment, confirmed by an official order from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on May 5, marks a significant milestone in the representation of women in senior legal positions.

Shalina’s new role positions her as the Central Government’s key legal representative before the Kerala High Court, as well as prominent tribunals including the Central Administrative Tribunal and Armed Forces Tribunal. Her tenure has been set for three years, or until further notice, allowing her to spearhead legal matters at a crucial level.

With over a decade of experience in government legal affairs, Shalina’s association with the Central Government’s legal wing dates back to 2015 when she was inducted as a panel counsel in the Kerala High Court. Her expertise in administrative and constitutional matters earned her a promotion in 2021, when she was appointed as standing counsel representing the Union of India before the Central Administrative Tribunal.

Beyond her legal career, Shalina is also recognized for her political connections through her marriage to MT Ramesh, the current State General Secretary of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala. However, her recent appointment is a proof to her professional credentials and long-standing contribution to legal service in the country.

As the first woman to hold this esteemed position, O.M. Shalina’s appointment stands as an inspiring achievement—paving the way for greater representation of women in high-ranking legal roles within India’s judicial system.
