Supreme Court Hosts Moot Court Competition to Mark 75th Anniversary

The Supreme Court of India hosted the ‘Supreme Court Law Clerks’ Moot Court Competition 2024′ on 27-28 April 2024. This unique event, held at the Supreme Court itself, was initiated under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court. The competition sought to hone the advocacy skills of law clerks and law researchers working in the chambers of Supreme Court judges and within the court’s registry.
The moot problem for this year’s competition presented a complex fictional scenario touching on key issues from both the Law of Contracts and Constitutional Law, providing participants with a rich field of legal arguments to explore. The competition comprised several rounds, with preliminary matches judged by experienced advocates and public policy experts.
The semi-final rounds, held on 28 April 2024, saw distinguished panels of senior lawyers judging the proceedings. Notable among them was Ms. Aishwarya Bhati, Additional Solicitor General of India, who brought her extensive expertise to the judging panel. The final round was a highlight, with Hon’ble Mr. Justice P. S. Narasimha, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India, and Ms. Rebecca John, a respected Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court, presiding over the session.
In a move towards greater public engagement, the final round was livestreamed on the Supreme Court of India’s YouTube Channel, allowing a broader audience to witness the competition and gain insights into the legal reasoning and advocacy skills displayed by the participants. This new initiative by the Supreme Court reflects its commitment to nurturing legal talent and fostering the next generation of legal professionals, reinforcing the court’s role in advancing the rule of law and justice in India.
