Supreme Court gets 4 new Judges, taking its total strength to highest-ever 34

Four new Judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court, taking its strength to 34 the highest ever.

According to separate Law Ministry notifications, Justices Krishna Murari, S.R.Bhat, V.Ramasubramanian and Hrishikesh Roy were appointed as Judges of the top court.

The Supreme Court Collegium of CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Bobde, Ramna,Arun Mishra and R.F Nariman had recommended their elevation on August 28 after finding them more “desirable and suitable than other Chief Justices and Senior puisine judges of the High Courts.

The Collegium says that they have taken into consideration the combined seniority of all Judges and has kept in mind the desirability of giving due representation to all High Court, as much as possible.

Shri Justice Krishna Murari

B.Sc., LL.B. was born on July 9, 1958. He was enrolled as an Advocate on December 23, 1981. He practiced in the Allahabad High Court for over 22 years in Civil, Constitutional, Company, Service and Revenue matters and has specialized in Civil, Revenue and Service cases. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on January 7, 2004 and appointed as a permanent Judge of the Allahabad High Court on September 18, 2005.

He stands at Serial No.5 in combined seniority of HC Judges on all India –Basis.He will have a term as Supreme Court Judge till July 8, 2023.

 Shri Justice Shripathi Ravindra Bhat

 B.A.(Hons.) LL.B., was born on October 21, 1958. He was enrolled as an Advocate on August 9, 1982 and practised in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India in Civil, Constitutional, Taxation, Labour, Service and Company matters for the last 21 years. His field of specialization is Public & Constitutional Law, Indirect Taxation, Service and Labour Law, Banking, Consumer Law and Educational Law. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on July 16, 2004 and as a permanent Judge on February 20, 2006.

As a Judge of Delhi High Court, he was part of several notable judgements such as declaration that RTI is applicable to the office of CJI etc.

He stands at Serial No.12 in combined seniority of HC judges on all- India basis.

He will have a term as Supreme Court Judge till October 21, 2023.

Shri Justice V. Ramasubramanian,

B.Sc., B.L, ICWAI (Inter) was born on June 30, 1958. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 16th February, 1983 and practiced for almost 23 years in High Court of Madras, City Civil & Small Causes Courts, State Consumer Commission & District Consumer Fora, Central and State Administrative Tribunals, Chennai in Service, Civil and Constitutional matters and specialized in Service matters. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on July 31, 2006 and as Permanent Judge on November 9, 2009. Transferred to Telangana & Andhra Pradesh High Court w.e.f. April 27, 2016.

He will have a term as SC judge till June 30, 2023.

Shri Justice Hrishikesh Roy

B.A.(Hons.), LL.B., was born on February 01, 1960. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 05.08.1982. He practiced in the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court and Gauhati High Court in Constitutional, Service,.  Administrative, Company, Civil, Criminal and Central Excise matters. His field of specialization is Company, Constitutional and Service matters. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on October 12, 2006 and as Permanent Judge on July 15, 2008.

As Supreme Court Judge he will have a term till February 1, 2025.
