In a significant move, the Supreme Court collegium has recommended the elevation of Justice Manmohan, the current Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, to the Supreme Court. The decision, passed today, highlights Justice Manmohan’s seniority as the second-highest ranked judge in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court judges, and the senior-most judge in the Delhi High Court.
The collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, emphasized that the Supreme Court bench currently includes only one judge from the Delhi High Court, underscoring the need for greater representation from the capital’s judiciary. Presently, the Supreme Court is functioning with 32 judges, just two short of its sanctioned strength of 34.
Born on December 17, 1962, Justice Manmohan is the son of Jagmohan Malhotra, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and the former Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. He was designated a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court in 2003, appointed as an additional judge in 2008, and confirmed as a permanent judge in 2009. In September 2023, he was appointed acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, and he officially took the oath of office as Chief Justice shortly thereafter.
