In a shocking turn of events, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has raided an Amazon warehouse in Airport City, Shamshabad, Hyderabad, seizing staggering 2,783 uncertified consumer goods worth over Rs. 50 lakhs. The raid, which took place on March 25, 2025, is part of a crackdown on the illegal sale and storage of products that bypass mandatory BIS certification under the BIS Act, 2016.

Led by P.V. Srikanth, Director & Head of BIS Hyderabad, and Joint Director Rakesh Tanneeru, the operation uncovered a range of high-value products, including 150 smartwatches, 15 electric water heaters, 30 CCTV cameras, 16 food mixers, 10 pressure cookers, 1,937 stainless steel water bottles, 326 wireless earbuds, 170 mobile chargers, and 90 toys—none of which had the required BIS certification. These products are regulated under the Government of India’s Quality Control Orders (QCOs), making BIS certification compulsory for their sale.

The enforcement operation revealed that these uncertified products were being offered for sale, putting consumers at risk. The BIS has confirmed that this massive violation could lead to severe legal consequences, including fines up to Rs. 5 lakh or even imprisonment, with further penalties possibly reaching up to ten times the value of the goods.

The raid highlights the growing concerns about counterfeit and substandard products in the market, particularly on e-commerce platforms. The BIS is intensifying efforts to ensure compliance with Indian Standards, warning manufacturers, importers, and online retailers to ensure that all goods meet the mandatory BIS standards.

BIS officials are also urging consumers to verify product authenticity before purchasing through the BIS Care App, which allows users to check the status of BIS licenses. Further legal proceedings are expected against the violators, sending a clear message that violations of the BIS Act will not be tolerated.
