New Delhi, April 8: The National Human Rights Commission of India has taken Suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging illegal detention and custodial torture of a journalist by the Rajkot Crime Branch police in Gujarat, raising serious concerns over human rights violations.
Acting on reports published on March 29, 2026, the Commission noted that the incident allegedly occurred on March 22, when the journalist was unlawfully apprehended by police personnel.
The report claims that he was stripped naked, suspended upside down, and subjected to severe physical torture, resulting in serious injuries.
The Commission further took note of allegations that the police attempted to dissuade staff at the Rajkot Civil Hospital from admitting the victim.
It has also been alleged that the journalist was threatened with false criminal cases and demolition of his residence.
Observing that the contents of the report, if found to be true, indicate grave violations of human rights, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Gujarat.
The Commission has sought a detailed report within two weeks, including the current health condition of the victim and the status of the ongoing investigation.
According to the report, the victim, who runs an online media outlet, was admitted to Rajkot Civil Hospital on March 23, a day after the alleged incident.
The report also details the extent of injuries he is said to have sustained during the alleged custodial abuse.
The matter is now under the scrutiny of the Commission, which is expected to examine the response from the state authorities and determine further course of action.
