Shami Legal Battle Escalates: Wife Approaches Supreme Court for Case Transfer to Delhi
(By Syed Ali Taher Abedi)
Delhi, 18-02-2026- The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami in response to petitions filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, seeking the transfer of multiple legal proceedings—including her maintenance plea and a domestic violence complaint—from West Bengal to Delhi.
The matter was listed before a bench comprising Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Manmohan. In her petition, Jahan argued that she has now shifted her residence to Delhi to raise her daughter and finds it difficult to frequently travel between Delhi and West Bengal for court hearings.
She emphasized that, without a regular source of income, she struggles to meet the daily expenses and welfare needs of her child.
Jahan further contended that Shami, being an international cricketer who travels extensively across countries, possesses sufficient financial resources and logistical means to contest the cases in Delhi.
She also highlighted that her family resides in Uttar Pradesh, which is geographically closer to Delhi compared to Kolkata, making Delhi a more practical venue for the proceedings.
Representing Jahan in court were advocates Deepak Prakash, Sriram Prakart, and Divyangana Mallik.
Shami and Jahan married in 2014 and have a daughter together. In 2018, Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence, leading to the registration of an FIR against him. Subsequently, she filed a petition under the Domestic Violence Act, seeking maintenance of ₹10 lakh—₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter.
The Supreme Court’s notice marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battle between the cricketer and his wife, as the question of jurisdiction and convenience for the petitioner now comes under judicial consideration.
