SCAORA Expresses Deep Anguish & Dismay Over Custodial Deaths of Father and Son In Tamil Nadu

In a strongly worded resolution passed by the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCAORA) has expressed dismay and condemned the horrific custodial deaths Thoothkudi’s Sathankulam, Tamil Nadu and called for strict action against the perpetrators.

It is mentioned in the resolution that the horrific instance of the custodial deaths in the country, and in particular the media reported barbaric custodial torture of Shri.Jeyaraj and his son, Shri Bennicks, in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi District of Tamil NNadu on the night of June19-20, 2020 resulting in their death subsequently.

As described by the competent authorities that they are examining the conduct of the police, of the doctor in not giving them proper medical attention in the government hospital and of the concerned judicial magistrate sending them in remand without due process in the said case.

It is further mentioned in the resolution that the SCAORA is, at present confining itself to the condemning the custodial torture and deaths as crime against humanity, and calling upon the authorities to take the strictest action, including prosecution for commission of criminal offences, against such officers who are found to be guilty.

In order to give respect to the constitutional guarantees of an accused, adhere with the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1973 and comply with various directions of cases, including though not limited to arrest, SCAORA has call upon all the concerned to take immediate steps.

The resolution was virtually passed by the Executive Committee of SCAORA
