Resumption Of Physical Hearings, Senior Designation, Chambers for Members, Elevation of SC Lawyers to Various High Courts: SCBA Writes to CJI Ramana

The Supreme Court Bar Association has written to CJI NV Ramana high lighting issues that require his immediate attention.
In the representation, the SCBA has revisited the controversial list of meritorious Supreme Court practitioners identified by a “search committee “and urge that these names be considered for elevation by High Court Collegium along with lawyers from the High Court Bar.
The issues of the Bar were discussed in detail in our last meeting and it addressed the same on various occasions but but till date no action appeared to have been taken.
The Letter have appreciated the spirit of the CJI NV Ramana ‘s concern about the issues of the Bar and asked him to take necessary steps in addressing all such issues.
Resumption of physical hearings – It is urged that the system of issuing special passes for the high security area should be dispensed with in the SOP issued by the Secretary-General. Entry into the high security area should be permitted by the use of a proximity card and the waiting areas would be the libraries and lounges where lawyers will wait on their own after observing covid protocol.
The SCBA further implored the CJI to conduct a full court meeting to clear pending names for senior advocates designations.
Chambers for Members – A new Chamber block at the Appu Ghar Complex has been built and ready since 2018-19, however the same remains unallotted till date. Preparation of Seniority list for allotment of chambers to be expedited so that allotment of chambers can be done at the earliest. earliest. It is also urges that expedite the construction of the chambers in Ac1.33 of land allotted to the Supreme Court of India behind petrol pump near ITO.
The representation has sought for an audience with the Chief Justice for further discussions on the issues stated.
The SCBA also seeks allocation of additional space to it by relocating the offices of the registry in the Annexe building for construction of an office of the Secretary as well as a Committee Room, a library and lunch room for the members of the Bar.
The letter further Adds that a list of meritorious Supreme Court practitioners as identified by the search committee was sent to the CJI for consideration. It is thus prayed that the names so suggested shall be considered by the respective High Court Collegiums along with the lawyers from the High Court Bar for the purpose of elevation.
The SCBA has thus sought that these concerns should be addressed by the Chief Justice and an audience be given to the Executive Committee of SCBA to discuss the same at the earliest.
