Justice Surya Kant to Assume Office as 53rd Chief Justice of India from November 24, Following Presidential Appointment

Delhi, 30, October, 2025- The President has appointed Justice Surya Kant, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, effective November 24, 2025, following the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice BR Gavai on November 23. This appointment was confirmed by Union Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Arjun Ram Meghwal, who stated that, in exercise of powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Justice of India from November 24.

The Law Minister extended his heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Justice Kant. Earlier this week, CJI Gavai recommended Justice Surya Kant’s name to the Union Government as his successor. Justice Surya Kant’s tenure as Chief Justice will continue until February 9, 2027.
