The President of India has nominated Justice Surya Kant, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), with the appointment taking effect from May 14, 2025. The official notification regarding this nomination was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, citing the President’s exercise of powers under Section 3(2)(b) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Justice Surya Kant, currently serving as the Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, brings with him extensive experience in the field of legal aid and judicial service. His elevation to the position of Executive Chairman of NALSA is in keeping with the established convention of appointing the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court to this role.

He succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai, who has been serving as the Executive Chairman of NALSA. Justice Gavai is set to assume office as the 51st Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, on May 13.

NALSA, established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, plays a crucial role in promoting access to justice for all, particularly for the marginalized and underprivileged sections of society. With Justice Surya Kant at the helm, the Authority is expected to continue its commitment to legal empowerment and equitable justice delivery.
