Petition Filed in High Court to Officially Refer to Allahabad HC as ‘The High Court of Uttar Pradesh’ In Documents

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been lodged in the Allahabad High Court, requesting that the Central government and relevant authorities mandate the designation of the Allahabad High Court as the High Court of Uttar Pradesh in all official notifications, communications, judgments, orders, and decrees.
The PIL has been initiated by Advocate Deepankar Kumar, hailing from Lucknow, and is being represented by Mr. Ashok Pandey. They contend that the existing nomenclature, steeped in colonial influences, ought to be substituted to more accurately mirror the court’s constitutional underpinnings and its affiliation with the state.
The petition further seeks a renaming of the Allahabad High Court Rules, 1952, to the Uttar Pradesh High Court Rules, with the intention of removing any ambiguity surrounding the court’s formal title. According to the petitioner, this uncertainty impacts not only legal practitioners and government personnel but also the wider populace.
The petition also addresses the issue of jurisdictional division between the two benches of the Allahabad High Court, located in Lucknow and Prayagraj. The petitioner contends that the Allahabad High Court Amalgamation order of 1948, which initially delineated this division, became obsolete upon the adoption of the constitution in 1950. Therefore, the petitioner asserts the need for a formal reassessment of jurisdictional boundaries.
This PIL comes in the backdrop of another ongoing litigation, also filed by Ashok Pandey in 2021, which addresses similar jurisdictional issues and seeks updates to the current legal framework governing the High Court’s operations.
