NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Tragic Death of Five-Year-Old in Borewell Incident in Rajasthan

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognisance of a tragic incident in Dausa, Rajasthan, where a five-year-old boy lost his life after being trapped for nearly 56 hours in a 150-foot deep borewell. The incident occurred on December 11, 2024, when the child fell into the borewell while playing in a field.
The NHRC has expressed serious concern over the matter, noting that the reported incident highlights a failure to adhere to the Supreme Court and Centre’s guidelines designed to prevent such accidents. The Commission raised alarm over the apparent negligence by local authorities, which not only demonstrates dereliction of duty but also constitutes a violation of the fundamental right to life.
In response to this tragic event, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Rajasthan, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The report should include the status of the FIR filed in the case, actions taken against the responsible public authorities, and any compensation provided to the family of the deceased child.
According to media reports, the boy was retrieved from the borewell unconscious, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead. The Commission’s intervention underscores its commitment to ensuring accountability and safeguarding human rights in such preventable tragedies.
