NHRC Reacts Swiftly to Tragic Suicide of 13-Year-Old Girl in Guntur School

New Delhi,25, October, 2024. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has urgently taken suo motu cognizance of a tragic incident involving the suicide of a 13-year-old girl student at a private school in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, on October 23, 2024. The incident reportedly occurred within the confines of the school hostel located in the Reddypalem village panchayat area.

The NHRC expressed deep concern regarding the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death, particularly as it took place in the lawful custody of school authorities. The Commission emphasized that the situation raises significant human rights concerns, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency.

In response, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within four weeks. This report should detail the status of the ongoing police investigation, findings from the post-mortem examination, and any other inquiries related to the incident.

The NHRC’s intervention underscores the urgent need for a thorough examination of the factors leading to this tragic event, ensuring that the rights and safety of students in educational institutions are prioritized and protected.
