NALSAR University of Law Appoints Gopalkrishna Gandhi, P. Sainath as Esteemed Distinguished Professors

Hyderabad, June 19, 2024 – NALSAR University of Law has appointed Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former Governor and distinguished diplomat, along with P. Sainath, renowned journalist and Magsaysay awardee, as Distinguished Professors. This honorary title has been instituted to integrate eminent public intellectuals into the NALSAR academic community, enriching academic discourse and knowledge generation.
“We aimed to expand the horizon of legal education and introduce law students to profound questions of justice,” stated Prof. Krishna Deva Rao, Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR University of Law. The University anticipates that the inclusion of these public intellectuals will transform legal learning beyond mere technicalities. “Students will engage deeply with issues of social and economic justice and explore the practical impact of law,” Prof. Rao added.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi currently serves as Distinguished Professor of History and Politics at Ashoka University, India. His distinguished career spans public administration, diplomacy, and constitutional roles, including his tenure as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Lesotho, Sri Lanka, and Ambassador to Norway and Iceland. He also served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009. Among his accolades are the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Award from the University of Mysore in 2016, the Lal Bahadur Shastri Award in 2016, and the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award in 2018.
P. Sainath, Founder-Editor of the People’s Archive of Rural India and former Rural Affairs editor at The Hindu, brings over three decades of expertise in rural journalism. He is a recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the Fukuoka Grand Prize in 2021, the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2007, and the inaugural Amnesty International’s Global Human Rights Journalism Prize in 2000. His book “Everybody Loves a Good Drought” is a Penguin Modern Classic and remains in its 60th reprint. His latest work, “The Last Heroes,” chronicles the lives and contributions of unsung heroes of India’s freedom struggle.
