Letter petition filed in Rajasthan HC: Seeks Central Agency probe into burning of priest alive in Karauli

A letter petition is filed in Rajasthan HC demanding a central investigation agency probe into the ghastly incident where a temple priest was set afire over a land dispute at Bukna Village in Sapotra, karauli District, and Rajasthan.
The dispute arose after the temple priest’s efforts to stop temple land encroachment.
In a statement given to police, the priest stated that a few influential people including accused Kailash Meenapoured petrol on his bales of bajra (millet) which were lying at the disputed land and set it on fire on Wednesday. He stated that they also poured petrol on him and tried to set him on fire.
He was rushed to Jaipur’s SMS Hospital where he died on Thursday evening.
A letter is addressed to Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice by a Supreme Court Advocate Pawan Prakash Pathak, stating that it is the primary duty of State to provide protection of every citizen and to preserve human dignity through various facilities and conditions.
The letters petition avers that “That as per the official Crime Record Bureau report a total of 51,56,172 cognizable crimes comprising 32,25,701 Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes and 19,30,471 Special & Local Laws (SLL) crimes were registered in 2019 which shows an increase of 1.6% in registration of cases over 2018 (50,74,635 cases). Crime rate registered per lakh population has increased marginally from 383.5 in 2018 to 385.5 in 2019.”
The lawyer further submits t “That we understand Crimes are inevitable and we cannot have a crime free society but such barbaric crimes is just inhumane. We understand a crime is a crime with whatever intensity it is done and it will remain an act against state only because State is a protector & guarantor of fundamental rights to all individuals.”

The petitioner seeks the direction of the victim’s family, stating that they are under “constant and immense threat.” It adds that the accused and any other person should be restrained from threatening or harassing the victim’s family.
