Legal Defense Fund (LDF) President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson issued the following statement in response to the announcement of Pamela “Pam” Jo Bondi as President-elect’s nominee for Attorney General:

“The nomination of Pam Bondi for Attorney General is deeply concerning. Bondi’s track record is riddled with actions and statements that undermine the core values of democracy, fairness, and the integrity of our electoral process. Her repeated false claims about the 2020 election, including her assertion that former President Trump won Pennsylvania, have stoked baseless conspiracy theories and sought to delegitimize the results of a free and fair election. These actions make her one of the earliest public figures to spread lies about the election, an alarming stance for anyone expected to uphold the rule of law.

Moreover, during the 2016 campaign, Bondi was a vocal supporter of the harmful ‘lock her up’ chants against a political rival, signalling not only a disregard for democratic norms but also an endorsement of retribution over justice. In a time when voter suppression efforts are intensifying and attacks on democratic institutions are becoming more frequent, the U.S. Attorney General should be someone who has shown a steadfast commitment to protecting voters’ rights and safeguarding the integrity of our elections. Pam Bondi’s record reflects a troubling disregard for these essential democratic principles.

Bondi has consistently demonstrated that her loyalty to the former President outweighs her duty to protect and defend the Constitution. As Attorney General, she would serve as a threat to the independence of the Department of Justice and its ability to serve as an impartial defender of the law. The nomination is further complicated by the presence of Trump’s personal criminal defense attorneys, whom he has selected to surround Bondi at the Justice Department. This team of legal advisors, who have personal and professional ties to the former President, raises serious concerns about conflicts of interest and the potential erosion of the department’s credibility and independence.

Given her record, her undermining of democratic processes, and the potential conflicts of interest that would accompany her appointment, the LDF strongly opposes Pam Bondi’s nomination for Attorney General. The position of the nation’s chief law enforcement officer demands an individual committed to upholding justice for all Americans, not someone with a demonstrated history of political partisanship and disregard for the law.
