Justice V. Ramasubramanian Urges Compassion as NHRC Internship Trains 80 Future Human Rights Defenders

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India concluded its esteemed four-week Summer Internship Programme in New Delhi today, where 80 selected students from universities nationwide engaged with key facets of human rights advocacy and the Commission’s initiatives in promoting and safeguarding rights.

At the valedictory session, NHRC Chairperson Justice Shri V. Ramasubramanian encouraged interns to value compassion and human connection above material goals, envisioning a society bound by empathy and shared values. He noted that the friendships forged among participants from diverse backgrounds represent the programme’s greatest achievement.
Justice Shri V. Ramasubramanian emphasized that true success stems from compassion and positively impacting lives. He wished the interns a purposeful future, urging them to grow daily into more empathetic and skilled individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.

Earlier, in his keynote address, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal congratulated the interns and stressed the importance of integrity and intention in all pursuits. He advised them to weigh their choices carefully—including what to avoid—and highlighted how even small ethical decisions can shape society. He encouraged them to reflect deeply and stay anchored to core values when navigating life’s uncertainties.
Ms. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary, NHRC, India presented the internship report, highlighting the Programme’s achievements and announcing the winners of the book review, group research project presentation, and declamation competitions.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director, NHRC, India. Senior NHRC, India officers including Shri R.P. Meena, Director General (Investigation), Shri Joginder Singh, Registrar (Law), and Shri Samir Kumar, Joint Secretary were present on the occasion.
Throughout the Programme, interns engaged in sessions led by esteemed professionals, including the NHRC Chairperson, Members, current and former union Secretaries, officers of several Commissions, ministries, directors of civil society organizations, and other experts. These sessions provided invaluable insights into the Commission’s work and the challenges surrounding human rights violations.
The Programme also featured field visits to key institutions such as Tihar Jail, SHEOWS NGO, National Commission for Women, and National Green Tribunal. These visits offered interns a first-hand understanding of ground realities and the practical aspects of human rights advocacy.
