Justice Shameem Akhtar Appointed Chairperson of Telangana SHRC; Justice A. Rajasekhar Reddy Named New Lok ayukta

Hyderabad, April 11, 2025 – In an important move aimed at strengthening the state’s judicial and anti-corruption institutions, the Telangana government has announced two high-profile appointments. Retired High Court Judge Justice Shameem Akhtar has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Telangana State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), while Justice A. Rajasekhar Reddy, also a former judge of the High Court, has been appointed as the Lokayukta of Telangana.
The appointments were formally notified on Friday by Chief Secretary A. Santhi Kumari. The notifications stated that the appointments were made under the respective statutory provisions governing the institutions of SHRC and Lokayukta.
Justice Shameem Akhtar to Lead Human Rights Commission
In a notification issued under sub-section (1) of Section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the Government of Telangana announced that Justice Shameem Akhtar will serve as the Chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission for a tenure of three years or until he attains the age of 70, whichever is earlier.
Justice Akhtar brings with him a legacy of judicial excellence and public service. Notably, in October 2023, he was appointed by the state government to head a one-man Commission of Inquiry to examine sub-classification among Scheduled Castes in Telangana. His recommendations were tabled in the Assembly, leading to the passing of legislation on this socially significant matter.

Justice A. Rajasekhar Reddy Takes Over as Lokayukta
In a parallel development, Justice A. Rajasekhar Reddy, another retired judge of the High Court, has been appointed as the Lokayukta of Telangana for a term of five years. During his tenure, he will hold the status equivalent to that of the Chief Justice of a High Court.
The post of Lokayukta is a key pillar in ensuring transparency and accountability in public administration, and Justice Rajasekhar Reddy’s appointment is expected to reinvigorate the functioning of this crucial institution.
Additionally, B.S. Jagjivan Kumar, a retired District and Sessions Judge, has been named as the Upa-Lokayukta (Deputy Lokayukta) for a term of five years. He will carry the status of a High Court Judge during his service.
