Justice Shameem Ahmed Sworn in As Judge of Madras High Court, Expanding the Bench To 67

In the vibrant city of Allahabad, a young scholar embarked on a transformative journey, beginning with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Allahabad University. This foundational education sparked a passion for justice and led him to pursue a degree in Law at the same esteemed institution.

After successfully graduating in Law, Justice Shamim Ahmed took a significant step on April 17, 1993, by enrolling as an advocate with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. His legal career quickly flourished as he practiced across various fields, including Civil, Constitutional, Service, Labour, Company Law, and Criminal cases at the Allahabad High Court.

His commitment to public service was evident when he became the Central Government Counsel in the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad on August 4, 2004. This role allowed him to represent the interests of the Central Government, showcasing his expertise and dedication to the law.

In a testimony to his growing reputation, he was appointed as the Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh in the High Court from May 22, 2015, until July 7, 2017. His legal acumen earned him additional roles, including serving as the Standing Counsel for the Prayagraj Development Authority, where he worked from March 4, 2016, until his elevation to the bench. He also represented the Zila Panchayat in Badaun and the Nagar Panchayat in Mahawan, Mathura, along with various educational institutions, highlighting his commitment to community service.

His tireless efforts and contributions to the legal field did not go unobserved. On December 12, 2019, he was elevated to the position of Additional Judge, marking a significant milestone in his career. This achievement was followed by a momentous occasion when he took the oath as a Permanent Judge on March 26, 2021.

Justice Shameem Ahmed was officially sworn in as a judge of the Madras High Court on Monday, bringing the court closer to its sanctioned capacity of 75 judges. The ceremony, held at the high court premises, was conducted by Chief Justice K.R. Shri Ram in a straightforward yet significant event.

Justice Ahmed previously served at the Allahabad High Court and has now transitioned as part of a routine judicial assignment to the Madras High Court, which now operates with a total of 67 judges.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by distinguished speakers, including Advocate General P.S. Raman, as well as the Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, alongside the Presidents of various advocates’ associations, all of whom warmly welcomed Justice Ahmed to the bench.

In his response, Justice Ahmed expressed heartfelt gratitude to both the bench and the bar for their stanch support throughout his journey.

Justice Ahmed’s appointment strengthens the Madras High Court and reflects his commitment to justice and service within the judiciary.

It is with immense honor and humility that I stand before you today, having taken the oath as a Judge of the Madras High Court. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Justice, esteemed Judges, and distinguished members of this Court for the warm welcome I have received. It is truly a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of serving justice in one of the oldest and most respected High Courts in India.

Reflecting on my journey, I am filled with deep gratitude for the experiences that have shaped my professional path. I began my legal career in Allahabad, a city renowned for its rich legal traditions. Since 1993, I practiced in the Principal Bench of the Allahabad High Court for over 26 years before my elevation. Each of these experiences has significantly contributed to my growth and understanding of the legal profession.

My tenure as Central Government Counsel and Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh, along with my representation of several important institutions, instilled in me the core values of fairness, impartiality, and dedication to justice.

I was honoured to be elevated as an Additional Judge on December 12, 2019, and took my oath as a Permanent Judge on March 26, 2021. The support of lawyers, fellow judges, and court staff has left an indelible mark on my life. From them, I have learned the true essence of justice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

As I step into this new role, I am committed to upholding the principles of justice and serving the people with integrity and dedication. Thank you once again for this incredible opportunity.

In closing, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone at the Madras High Court for the warm welcome I have received. I am eager to collaborate with each of you in our shared mission of delivering justice and upholding the rule of law. Together, we will work to ensure that the ideals of our Constitution are preserved and that justice remains accessible to all, regardless of their background.

I find inspiration in the words of Swami Vivekananda: “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.” As I begin this new chapter in my career, I carry with me the invaluable lessons from my journey thus far. I pledge to serve with integrity, impartiality, and a profound commitment to the law.
