In a landmark decision, a special CBI court on Friday acquitted former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Nirmal Yadav, in the infamous 17-year-old “Cash at Judge’s Door” corruption case. The court cited the prosecution’s failure to establish charges against the accused, delivering a verdict that has sparked renewed discussions in legal circles.
The case, which dates back to August 13, 2008, revolved around a misdelivered packet containing ₹15 lakh meant for Justice Nirmal jit Kaur, another Supreme Court judge. The cash was allegedly linked to a property deal involving Justice Yadav. However, after scrutinizing 69 out of 84 witnesses, and with the High Court allowing 12 more to be examined, the court found no evidence to support the allegations.
Justice Yadav, who was placed on leave in 2009 following her name surfacing in the scandal, later served at the Uttarakhand High Court. Speaking to reporters post-verdict, she expressed her relief and faith in the judiciary, stating, “I have suffered, but today justice has been done. I have no regrets and believe this is a victory of truth.”
The case also saw the acquittal of co-accused Ravindra Singh, Bhashan Rajiv Gupta, and Nirmal Singh, while former Haryana AAG Sanjeev Bansal passed away during the trial.
Defence counsel Vishal Garg Narwana highlighted the absence of credible evidence, saying, “The court has cleared Justice Yadav and four others of all charges. It’s a testament to the integrity of our judicial system.”
This verdict not only brings closure to a long-standing legal saga but also reaffirms the resilience of truth in the face of prolonged allegations.
