Justice Dinesh Maheshwari Appointed Chairman of 23rd Law Commission of India

New Delhi: 15, April- Retired Supreme Court judge Justice Dinesh Maheshwari has been appointed as the Chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission of India. The newly constituted panel officially took charge yesterday and will serve a term until 2027.
Joining Justice Maheshwari on the Commission are advocate Hitesh Jain and Professor BHU from the faculty of law, along with other appointed members. Their primary mandate includes reviewing outdated laws, recommending necessary amendments, and suggesting ways to enhance judicial access and efficiency in the country.
Justice Maheshwari brings a wealth of experience to the role. He practiced law for over two decades in Rajasthan before being appointed to the bench of the Rajasthan High Court in 2004. He later served as a judge of the Allahabad High Court, Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, and Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in January 2019. He retired from the apex court in 2023.
Advocate Hitesh Jain, a seasoned legal practitioner, is currently the Managing Partner of Parinam Law Associates and serves as Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mumbai unit. He has represented clients in civil, criminal, commercial, and constitutional matters and has served as Special Counsel for the State of Maharashtra in both the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.
Among the Commission’s members is Professor D.P. Verma, a returning member from the 22nd Law Commission, who brings over four decades of academic experience in public international law, jurisprudence, and human rights. He also served as Additional Director of Research and Training at the National Judicial Academy from 2017 to 2020.
The Law Commission of India is a non-statutory body established by the Central Government through notification. Each iteration is constituted with specific terms of reference. The current commission has been tasked with identifying obsolete laws, recommending necessary legal reforms, and proposing methods to improve access to justice and the overall judicial system.
The 22nd Law Commission, which preceded the current one, was chaired by Justice Rituraj Awasthi, former Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Its members included Justice Sankaran, Professor Anand, Professor Pallavi Paliwal, Professor Dr. Raka Arya, and Mr.M. Karunanithi.
