Justice BR Gavai Nominated as Next Chief Justice of India

New Delhi,16, April- In a significant move, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has officially recommended Justice BR Gavai as his successor, paving the way for him to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India. The recommendation was made to the Centre on April 16.

Justice Gavai’s appointment, upon confirmation, will mark a historic moment—he will become only the second Chief Justice from the Scheduled Caste community, following Justice KG Balakrishnan who served until 2010.

Justice Khanna, who assumed office as the 51st CJI on November 10, 2024, is set to demit office on May 13, 2025, after a tenure of nearly seven months. He was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019.

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, B.Com., LL.B. was born on November 24, 1960. He was enrolled as an Advocate on March 16,1985 and practiced at the Bombay High Court in Constitutional, Administrative, Civil, Criminal, Service Laws, Taxation Law, Municipal & Panchayat Laws, Co-operative Laws, Educational Laws etc. He specialized in Constitutional and Administrative Laws. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003 and as Permanent Judge on November 12, 2005.

Justice Gavai, currently serving on the Supreme Court bench, is expected to take charge following Khanna’s retirement and will serve until his own retirement on November 23, 2025.
