Judiciary Meets Legacy: CJI B.R. Gavai Commemorates Gandhi’s Birth Anniversary at Mauritius

Port Louis, Mauritius | October 2, 2025 — In a poignant tribute to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, Hon’ble Shri Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, Chief Justice of India, along with his family, participated in the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations held at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius. The event marked the 156th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation and underscored the enduring influence of Gandhian values across borders.

Justice Gavai, who is currently on a three-day official visit to Mauritius, paid floral homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the institute, a symbolic gesture that resonated deeply with the Indo-Mauritian community. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute, a joint initiative between the governments of India and Mauritius, serves as a cultural bridge, promoting Indian heritage, language, and philosophy in the island nation.
The commemorative ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr the Hon Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research; Dr the Hon Mahend Gungapersad, Minister of Education and Human Resource; junior ministers, Members of Parliament, and senior officials. Shri Anurag Srivastava, High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, also graced the occasion, reinforcing the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations.
The Gandhi Jayanti event featured cultural performances, reflections on Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings, and reaffirmations of his message of peace, non-violence, and social justice. Speaking at the ceremony, local leaders emphasized the relevance of Gandhi’s ideals in today’s global context and praised the collaborative efforts of India and Mauritius in preserving his legacy.
Justice Gavai’s visit includes engagements with judicial counterparts, legal scholars, and government officials, aimed at fostering judicial cooperation and knowledge exchange. He is also scheduled to deliver the Inaugural Sir Maurice Rault Lecture on October 3, focusing on “The Rule of Law in the Biggest Democracy,” a theme that aligns with his distinguished career in constitutional and administrative law2.
