(Judicial Quest News Network)
On March 5, 2025, a joint operation by the Secunderabad Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to the successful interception of a drug smuggling attempt at Secunderabad Railway Station. The authorities carried out a surprise check targeting drug peddlers operating on trains and platforms. During the operation, two individuals were apprehended while transporting dry ganja from Berhampur to Hyderabad aboard the Konark Express.
Arrested Accused:
- A-2: Ananta Rait, 32, son of Pancha Rait, resident of Kesariguda village, Antaraba, Gajapati District, Odisha (761017)
- A-3: Suresh Badaraita, 27, son of Late Siman Badaraita, resident of 711 Muthuguda village, Guluba Post, Motagura, Adava Thana, Gajapati District, Odisha (761217)
- A-1 (Absconding): Kiran, a resident of Gajapati District, Odisha
The operation:
The accused, Ananta Rait and Suresh Badaraita, are close friends who often worked together as agricultural labourers. They had a routine of traveling to their village in the afternoons, followed by playing volleyball in Muthuguda village. On the afternoon of March 4, 2025, Ananta and Suresh were approached by A-1, Kiran, who lured them into smuggling Ganja to Hyderabad. Kiran promised to pay them ₹5,000 each for their involvement.
Desperate due to their low wages, Ananta and Suresh agreed to transport the Ganja. They were given two bags, each containing five bundles of dry Ganja, and instructed to travel to Berhampur Railway Station. Kiran provided them with his contact number but refused to share his own phone number, reassuring them that he would contact them upon their arrival in Secunderabad, where another associate would collect the drugs.
Without purchasing a train ticket, Ananta and Suresh boarded the Konark Express with the Ganja hidden under a train berth. The train’s Ticket Examiner (TTE) issued them tickets with fines during the journey. Upon arrival at Secunderabad Railway Station on Platform No. 10 at around 11:05 AM on March 5, 2025, the two men disembarked and waited for Kiran’s call.
Police Intervention:
At approximately 11:15 AM, Secunderabad Railway Police and RPF personnel, led by Sri. M.A. Majeed, SIRP, and Sri. K. Chandra Shekar, RPC 35 of RPS Secunderabad, approached Ananta and Suresh with suspicion. After a thorough inquiry, the police seized 10.604 kilograms of dry Ganja, worth approximately ₹5,30,200, along with two mobile phones and a train ticket from the accused.
Joint Effort:
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Smt. Chandana Deepti, IPS, Superintendent of Railway Police, and Sri. S.N. Jawed, DSRP SC(U). The officers and personnel from both GRP and RPF Secunderabad, including Bhavani Shankar Saraswat IPF/SC, J. Kamalakar Rao, KM Sudha, K. Lavanya, and Madhuri Singh, played a pivotal role in apprehending the suspects. The IGP of Railway and Road Safety, Ramesh Naidu, IPS, has praised the exemplary efforts of the team and assured suitable rewards for the officers involved in the successful operation.
The timely intervention and vigilance of the railway police and RPF have once again proven critical in preventing the illegal transportation of narcotics, safeguarding the public, and dismantling a dangerous drug smuggling operation.
