India’s NHRC Amplifies Human Rights Advocacy Across Borders, Guided by Justice V Ramasubramanian

New Delhi, October 18: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Justice V. Ramasubramanian, highlighted the Commission’s robust record of service over the past 32 years, underscoring its steadfast commitment to constitutional ideals and protection of human dignity.
Since its inception, the Commission has handled over 2.3 million cases, providing monetary relief in nearly 10,000 cases, disbursing a cumulative amount exceeding ₹263 crore to victims of human rights violations.
During the past year alone, the NHRC registered 73,846 cases and took Suo motu cognizance in 108 matters involving serious human rights concerns. Justice Ramasubramanian observed that the Commission continues to issue advisories and recommendations to strengthen governance mechanisms in line with human rights principles.
The NHRC presently functions through 12 Core Groups, facilitating expert consultations and collaborative initiatives. It has also conducted two offline internship programmes, with increasing student engagement in human rights discourse.
In collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Commission is organising a special programme for the Global South, aimed at enhancing cross-border cooperation in human rights protection. Several international human rights institutions from the Global South have shown interest in signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the NHRC.
As part of its outreach initiatives, the Commission has also undertaken camp sittings in the States of Odisha and Telangana, ensuring accessibility and speedy redressal at the grassroots level. Additionally, the NHRC received over 350 entries for its Short Film Competition, reflecting growing public awareness and creative participation in human rights advocacy.
Justice Ramasubramanian reaffirmed that the Commission remains committed to upholding the spirit of justice, equality, and human dignity, as enshrined in the Constitution of India.
