India Imposes Restrictions on Import of Laptops, Tablets, Computers With Immediate Effect

In a significant move India has imposed curbs on import of laptops, tablets, personal computers and ultra-small form factor computers and servers falling under HSN 8741 shall be restricted and their import would be allowed against a valid license for restricted imports.
The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT),issued a notification on Thursday.
The move is likely to enhance and encourage the local manufacturing of the high end electronic items in India.
The DGFT notification, however, clarified that the said restrictions would not apply to “imports under baggage Rules”
Up to 20 of these items per consignment are also eligible for an import license exemption. These exemptions are intended for activities such as research and development; testing, benchmarking and evaluation re-pair and re-export product development, reads the notification.
