Delhi,27, February,2025. The highly anticipated elections for the Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Executive Members of the Bar Council of India (BCI) are set to take place on March 2, 2025. With the nomination deadline closing on February 28, 2025, and the withdrawal option available until March 1, the stage is set for a fierce contest among the legal fraternity’s top contenders.
This year’s election is expected to be one of the most competitive in BCI history, with candidates from various states preparing to challenge established figures. Strategizing, lobbying, and intense competition are shaping a charged election atmosphere, making it a focal point for the legal community across the country.
Currently, Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar has held the Chairman’s position for six consecutive terms, while Senior Advocate S. Prabhakaran from Tamil Nadu has served as Vice Chairman for the past three years. Additionally, Senior Advocate Apurba Kumar Sharma from Assam, the current Executive Chairman, is also up for election.
Alongside the elections for Chairman and Vice Chairman, the BCI will also elect Executive Members, who will play a key role in electing the Executive Committee Chairman. This pivotal position is vital in shaping the council’s policies and decisions.
While Bihar has enjoyed dominance in securing the Chairman’s position unopposed for six terms, this year’s elections reveal a significant shift, as members from other states are poised to challenge Bihar’s stronghold. Despite the emerging competition, Mr. Mishra remains a formidable contender, with his broad support across the legal community and his well-established role as a liaison between the legal profession, the government, and the Supreme Court.
The race for Vice Chairman and Executive Members is equally intense, with several aspirants vying for a place in these crucial roles. As the election approaches, speculation continues to swirl about potential shifts in leadership, with the outcome on March 2, 2025, set to redefine the future direction of the Bar Council of India.
