Guardians or Predators? NHRC Demands Answers After Cop Allegedly Linked to Kanpur Minor’s Rape

New Delhi: 15th January 2026- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken Suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the alleged abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, an incident said to have occurred on January 5, 2026. Notably, one of the accused is reportedly a Sub-Inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Taking serious note of the allegations, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

The Commission, upon a careful perusal of the news report, has noted that the allegations contained therein, if found to be true, disclose a grave and disturbing issue pertaining to the violation of fundamental human rights.

Taking cognizance of the seriousness of the matter, the Commission has deemed it appropriate to intervene and has accordingly issued a formal notice to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh.

Through this notice, the Commission has sought a comprehensive and detailed report on the incident, directing that the same be furnished within a period of two weeks for its consideration.

A media report dated January 10, 2026, states that the victim was abducted from near her residence on the night of January 5, 2026.

She was taken to a location near the railway line, where she endured gang rape by two individuals.

The victim’s family first approached the Bhimsen Police outpost to lodge an FIR but were denied.

They then proceeded to Sachendi police station, where an FIR was finally registered against the unidentified occupants of the vehicle for abduction and rape.
