Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, recently informed Parliament that the government is actively exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to build a smarter judicial system. Technologies like machine learning (ML), optical character recognition (OCR), and natural language processing (NLP) are being incorporated to reduce manual data entry, improve file management, and enhance user experience.

AI is already being used for intelligent scheduling, case prediction, administrative efficiency, automated filing, and enhanced communication with litigants through chatbots. A subcommittee of six High Court judges, supported by a team of technical experts, has been formed to address critical data privacy and protection concerns.

Under the e-Courts project, the government has earmarked ₹7210 crore for Phase 3, which includes 24 project components. Notably, ₹53.257 crore of this amount is allocated for integrating AI, blockchain, and other emerging technologies into the system by 2027.

The development follows a question raised in Rajya Sabha by Dr. Syed Nasir Hussain, who sought clarity on government efforts to leverage AI for case management, data privacy, and reducing the backlog of 5.19 crore pending cases in Indian courts.
