Global Skills Boost: WIPO and RGNIIPM Launch Advanced Patent Examiner Training Program

Hyderabad, Telangana — The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM), under the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM), have jointly launched an Advanced Certificate Training Program for Patent Examiners at the Dr. MCR HRD Institute of Telangana.
This specialized training initiative brings together 25 patent officers from India’s CGPDTM along with international participants from Bangladesh, Egypt, Georgia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Uganda—highlighting a strong global commitment to intellectual property (IP) excellence.
Mrs. Santhi Kumari, IAS (Retd), Vice Chairman & Director General (FAC) of the Dr. MCR HRD Institute, graced the inaugural session as Chief Guest. She emphasized the significance of the program in enhancing the skills and global perspectives of patent examiners. “This program will not only empower Indian examiners but will also foster global cooperation and shared learning in IP management,” she noted. She further underlined the importance of robust IP systems in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic development.
Guest of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Unnat P. Pandit, CGPDTM, joined virtually and lauded India’s growing footprint in the IP arena. “India has surpassed the milestone of 100,000 patent applications annually—a testament to its innovation-driven growth. Our 50-year collaboration with WIPO has only deepened, and we’re eager to continue this trajectory,” he remarked.
Mr. Victor Owade, Counsellor from WIPO, Geneva, reiterated WIPO’s inclusive vision for intellectual property. He highlighted IP as a transformative tool for economic development, capable of driving investment, enterprise growth, and job creation across nations.
Also speaking at the event were Mr. Anoop K. Joy, Joint Controller of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, and Dr. D. T. Chary, Centre Head, CMB at Dr. MCR HRD Institute, who welcomed the participants.
The event was skilfully conducted by Ms. Tripti Pandey and Ms. Manisha Lakhera from the Indian Patent Office, who also extended the vote of thanks.
This program marks a strategic step toward building a globally competent patent examination workforce and enhancing cross-border IP collaboration.
